This week I spent some time at the Mackenzie King Estate with my teacher Harry. I’ve been here often, but really only to ‘pass through’ when snowshoeing or hiking when I would marvel at the beauty of the estate, but never take the time to actually pay attention and become present to its beauty.
This photo was taken during one of my exercises. We were standing in the beautiful “Abbey Ruins” an assemblage of structures collected by Mackenzie King from the fire-ravaged Parliament Buildings and arranged to resemble a gothic abbey. My exercise at that moment was to take as many photos from within this structure, but not to include anything of the ground in the photos. This turned out to be a challenge because I noticed that I always like to include tree trunks in my photos. That’s where my first focus goes. So now I had to raise my view and, it was rewarding. It was early morning so the sun was still low and shining through the trees in a way that I could capture the starburst effect of the sun.
