The First Day of Autumn

Today is the first official day of autumn so Kody and I walked around in the Gats to check out the progress of the colours. There was not much colour at all to see, but there definitely was a palpable feeling that we are transitioning into the next season: there is a dryness to everything and some of the trees are slightly yellowing in readiness for transformation to their more dramatic colours as we move further into the fall.

As I drove along the Gatineau Parkway in the late afternoon I was struck by the glowing vibrancy of this stand of birch trees. I must have driven past these trees at least a hundred times over the past few years, however as it would nearly always have been in the early morning I would have missed the dramatic impression created by the low angle of the late afternoon sun. I love this dense clump of beautiful white birch tree trunks and have made a mental note to return to this spot when the leaves have turned and perhaps even later when they’ve fallen and the branches are bare.
