Early Morning Frost

I was out early one sunny morning this week to be rewarded with frost in Meech Creek Valley. I was fortunate to be early enough to enjoy the vision before it was melted by the sun: frost in the trees, on the ground and, all over the tall plants standing along the sides of the road. I was surprised also to discover icing up on some small branches in the beaver dam beside the trail to Herridge and Healy cabins. I’ve often gazed at this beaver dam as I hike past, but today I took time to admire the workmanship by getting in close, and it is far more solid than it appears – I simply wasn’t strong enough to remove a particular branch that I found to be intrusive in my photos. These dams are here to stay.  The colours now are duller as we get closer to November, which for me has a poignant beauty – a season in waiting and preparing for the snowfall of winter.
