Last week I hiked into Carman Lake just south of Wakefield, a spot I love because it is so peaceful and not yet discovered by many of the Park visitors.  Its my ‘go to’ place for snowshoeing in the winter because of the solitude: I’ve enjoyed many hours either traversing it or exploring unofficial trails around its perimeter.  Today I was saddened by the sight I saw – the large and flourishing beaver dam at the south end of the lake had been removed leaving extensive mud flats in place of the lovely waterfowl habitat.  Regardless of this being the busy mating and nesting season there were no waterfowl to be seen.

I don’t know what the subject of this photo is!  It’s intriguing pattern simply attracted my eye as well as the fact that the mud flats were covered with this debris which I assume is exposed underwater plant growth.  I hope that the underwater creatures who were dependant on this growth have been able to find some alternative.
