My first ski of the year, November 14th, one day earlier than my record first ski of November 15th which was last year. I was exhilarated, as was everyone I met: we all had grins on our faces and acknowledged each other and chatted about this wonderful gift of an early season ski.
As I skied, I recalled that just over one week ago I was bushwhacking with friends for 7 hours in what we referred to as the ‘bare bones of November’, when the landscape is bare and totally naked, exposed and visible. That experience had its own connection with the landscape. Today, I’m connecting in such a different way, gliding over the softness of snow cover on my skis and taking in the beauty of the softness of the snow cover on all that surrounds me. And, connecting with others.
I feel so alive and connected to the annual cycle of the earth and its seasons. So grateful to be able to access this sanctuary, the Gatineau Park, where the expressions of our seasons can be celebrated. So grateful to share this with others and experience a sense of communal joy.
