The Textures of Winter Celebrations

by Margaret on December 23, 2019

I ‘ve been sort of ‘grounded’ for the past 10 days, living with a cold and laryngitis, so today it felt important to become ‘grounded’ in a more positive way, before stepping into our family Christmas celebration.  So, Callum and I went for a hike in the Gats.

We didn’t see another soul as we walked along old Cafferty Rd into Carmen Lake. As we walked along we each became quieter and quieter, until we found ourselves sitting in silence by the side of the frozen lake, just breathing it all in.

I was struck by the variations in textures today.  Especially so as the outflow of the lake was not frozen over and the flowing water was juxtaposed with rocks and frozen ice and snow.  So many variations in textures.  It had me thinking of the variations in the celebrations at this time of year – Christmas, celebrating the birth of Jesus as the light of the world, Hanukkah, celebrating the miracle of a light from oil that lasted for 8 days,  and, the Winter Solstice, celebrating the return of the light and the lengthening of the days.  I love how our human beliefs reflect our natural world.
