It was so quiet as I was eating my breakfast on the side of Fortune Lake. I generally don’t see much wildlife when I’m here, but I do continue to come, just in case. I heard a soft kerplunk and turned my head thinking I was pretty sure a frog had just landed on a lily pad. It was that sound. Kerplunk. Also a bit of movement out of the corner of my eye.
Grabbed my camera and pointed it in that direction and zoomed in so I could see more than my eyes could see and I felt certain that’s what it was. After taking a few photos of it I began to doubt because there was no movement at all from the frog. Was it just a leaf? I know frogs can sit still for a long time, but I would have appreciated if it had shown a bit of movement.
Back home the computer confirmed my instincts: a clear image of a frog positioned beautifully in between the round lily pads and the parallel lines of the grasses. I was surprised at the size of its eyes. I wonder if my ability to pick him out, even though he wasn’t clear, was because of where he was positioned – at the margin, in between the two patterns. A disconnect in pattern.
Are you able to find the frog in the photo at the top?
Below are more photos of various patterns on the lake this morning.
