Saturday was a 10/10 day for being outside, more like the month of March than the middle of February. Callum was so excited because one of his favourite people in the whole wide world was along – my son Chris joined us for our hike to the lookout at Carman Lake. Solid blue sky bringing warm spring-like sun to our cheeks and fresh snow overnight. Everything was perfect. But it was Callum’s joy and happiness that made the day for us. He was all over Chris playing and jumping and running back and forth to check on his pack. No one can convince me that dogs don’t feel joy! This guy exuded pure happiness and joy.
I’m going to miss these hikes while my shoulder heals over the next six weeks with my arm in a sling- outings such as this feed my soul. And, to top it off, spring snow and sun and running creeks are what I love most! I plan to savour thoughts of sking pain-free next winter and having more hikes like this one with my two guys.
This poem by Mary Oliver, from her book Dog Songs sums it up for me:
IF YOU ARE HOLDING THIS BOOK
You may not agree, you may not care, but
if you are holding this book you should know
that of all the sights I love in this world –
and there are plenty – very near the top of
the list is this one: dogs without leashes.
